If you are looking for new challenges and career prospects, we offer an exciting Master of Surgery degree to help you achieve your aims.

The Master of Surgery is aimed at junior doctors considering, or training for, a career in Surgery. The degree will assist in developing technical skills in surgical procedures and will provide participants with the transferable skills to initiate and develop research projects effectively and independently.  This Masters program aims to incorporate a sound evidence base in teaching to deliver effective practical applications in surgery and promote the skills required to independently conduct high calibre research.

Small interactive and practical classes

Our Master of Surgery programme offers small classes with high-calibre teaching staff.  It is conducted in partnership with the Clinical Teaching and Evaluation Centre (CTEC), which is a purpose-built facility with significant infrastructure, specialising in teaching surgical skills outside the operating theatre.

A wide variety of teaching methods are used including:

  • small group teaching
  • lectures
  • interactive discussions
  • practical skills workshops
  • simulation sessions.

Skill development

You will develop valuable skills from activities such as:

  • participating in surgical skills laboratory workshops
  • working in a risk-free but authentic simulated environment
  • being mentored by Surgical Consultants, and mentoring peers and/or medical students
  • interacting with experienced teaching and research staff.

Areas of interest

Undertaking the Master of Surgery course will allow development of surgical  and research skills in your chosen surgical sub speciality.

As well as generic surgical skills, professional supervision and expertise is offered in the following sub-specialities:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Orthopaedics
  • Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Gastro Intestinal/Endoscopy
  • Urology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Surgical Education
