The prime focus is the evaluation of various surgical techniques and/or prostheses in terms of outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.

Orthopaedic research at Fremantle Hospital is conducted under the leadership of Professor Piers Yates


The group’s past and present research interests include:

  • orthopaedic complications of low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH)
  • use of intra-articular and periarticular infiltration to improve pain control and functional outcome following total knee arthroplasty
  • influence of femoral canal morphology on femoral stem fixation in hip replacement surgery
  • bipolar versus monopolar head articulation in cemented hemiarthroplasty for patients with neck of femur fracture
  • tibiofibular kinematics following ankle fracture treatment using single-plane RSA
  • effect of asymmetric flexion and extension gaps on total knee arthroplasty


The group has strong collaborations with local, interstate, Swiss and UK research groups and industry partners.
